Title: Are You Transliterate? (Part 1 of 2 on Transliteracy)

Leader/s: Sue Thomas  including presentations by Kate Pullinger and Jess Laccetti (all De Montfort University)

Theme: E-literacies

Time: 15:45 - 17:15

This panel combines a visual presentation with lively debate about the impact of new media on the study of literature. One way to approach digital narratives is by learning to read, write and interact across a range of platforms from orality through print, TV, radio and film, to networked digital media. This skill has been called transliteracy – literacy across media – and has many applications in literature and beyond. The panel, comprising novelist Kate Pullinger, co-creator with digital artist Chris Joseph of   Inanimate Alice, a prize-winning collaborative online narrative; Jess Laccetti, a postgraduate student conducting research into multi-mimetic web fiction, and Sue Thomas, print author and transliteracy researcher, all from the  Production and Research in Transliteracy group at De Montfort University, will present examples of new media work and discuss the nature of transliteracy.
