Our Report series

The English Subject Centre publishes a series of reports based on research undertaken in areas where information about the subject, its teaching and its graduates has been lacking or where there are issues of current concern. All our completed reports are available here. Print copies of published reports are circulated to all Heads of English departments in the UK. Reports which are currently in production are available in MS Word format only.

Author: Alexandra Cronberg
Published: May 2011

A sequel to John Hodgson’s earlier report on the experience of English students (see below), this report is based on a series of focus groups conducted with students. It provides evidence of the how they come to embark on joint honours study, the benefits they gain and the difficulties they encounter.  The report explores the synergies students perceive between their subjects and how they cope with different expectations and teaching styles.  Students also give their views on how they are approaching their dissertations and, in the longer term, their future careers.

Small Group Teaching in English Literature: A Good Practice Guide in PDF format (368kb)

Series Editor: Jonathan Gibson
Published: November 2010
ISBN: 978-1-905846-41-2

This guide aims to give practical help to those new to teaching small groups, and to suggest some fresh ideas for more experienced lecturers.  It provides suggestions for activities you might use in seminars, and ideas for relating what happens in a seminar to what happens in the rest of the  course.  It also includes tips on the detailed running of seminars, such as setting up ‘ground rules’, and on evaluation. The content is illustrated by examples contributed by English lecturers and quotes from students.  Whatever your experience and expertise, you will find something useful in this Guide.

If you wish to order print copies of published reports, or indicate your wish to receive a copy of a forthcoming report, please contact the English Subject Centre, and we will endeavour to meet your request subject to availability.

All our reports are available to read online or download in PDF format (this requires the free Acrobat reader to view)
