Alumni Information Seminar - 05/06

Project description

We ran an alumni careers information afternoon for second year students which featured speakers drawn from a range of occupational areas. Students from single and joint honours were invited.

Benefits to English students

The afternoon provided an insight into the range of opportunities open to English graduates and the experience and qualities needed for a number of career areas. Students also gathered information on the nature of career paths and routes to entry for a number of careers. As a significant proportion of students were interested in areas such as media, publishing and PR which have few large graduate recruitment schemes, it was important that they understood the need to be proactive and to seek out vacancies and experiences.

Outline plan of activities

The event took place in June 2005. Current second year students were contacted and asked to identify career areas in which they were interested so that we could find appropriate speakers. I envisaged that 4 or 5 speakers would be invited and that the funding would cover the travel and accommodation costs for speakers, many of whom were based outside the region.
