Introduction

The Subject Centre operated through a number of modes and forms of activity. One very important one was the hosting of ‘events’: workshops, or practically-oriented one-day (and sometimes longer) conferences devoted to specific aspects of curriculum, teaching, or departmental life. The Centre sought to supplement the diet of research conferences (to which academics are broadly accustomed), with occasions designed to share ideas and examples of the subject in its teaching dimension. Over 11 years the Centre ran approximately 150 of these, usually in conjunction with a host department or other body. These events – as attendance and enthusiastic participation showed – were highly valued by colleagues. In the nature of such events, a lot of the value of what took place is no longer visible. But we know that shared ideas and practices fed into the professional lives of individuals and departments, and hence, but by bit, into the lives of students. And reports and other outputs do exist for some these workshops. We hope you will find it interesting and stimulating to explore these fossil traces of vigorous and imaginative collaborative activity.
