Enabling and Enhancing the Study of English

Event Overview:
This one-day conference will debate best practice methods for enabling undergraduate students to gain competencies in, and awareness of, expository skills such as critical thinking, information gathering, writing skills, group participation and presentation skills. This conference is designed to offer models, pose queries and address problems in relation to specific concerns within English studies. We aim to address how dedicated skills training can enable and enhance students' awareness of resourceful and independent approaches towards learning, and how to bridge the perceived gulf between academic and employment - related skills.
  • Theoretical sources and critical reading techniques.
  • Putting theory into practice in the analysis of a literary text.
  • Encouraging students to be active learners.
  • Interpreting the many facets of textuality.
  • Using the language of the discipline: conceptual, critical and linguistic terminology.
  • Teaching the conventions: exercises in referencing systems.
  • Advanced essay writing skills.
  • Introducing students to library research.
  • Electronic databases and the internet.
  • Dialogue and presentation skills.
  • Critical evaluation: making the most of self, peer and formal feedback
