Linking Teaching & Research - Images of Performance

The season at the Globe is divided equally between the theatre season and the education season. As a result, the students on the Text and Playhouse MA course have had access to performances of the plays which both preceded and ended the academic year of their programme. The following productions were performed at the Globe during the running of the course:

2000 - The Tempest, Hamlet, Two Noble Kinsmen, The Antipodes

2001 - King Lear, Macbeth, Cymbeline

2002 - Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Golden Ass

2003 - Richard II, Richard III, Dido Queen of Carthage, Edward II, The Taming of the Shrew

The Globe has maintained an extensive archive of their productions since the inception of the theatre. Students on the programme have been encouraged to study earlier productions at the Globe and elsewhere in the UK and abroad as part of their study. In particular the students have paid attention to productions of Hamlet as a result of Professor Ann Thompson's course ' Hamlet and its Afterlife'.

There are a number of online sources of information for production analysis of Shakespeare in the UK. The Designing Shakespeare Archive at the Performing Arts Data Service ( click on browse then Theatre Resources), holds images and production information relating to the Shakespearean performances at the Globe during the 2000 season. It also contains similar information about earlier productions studied by the students at the Globe, the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. The Royal Shakespeare Company have an online archive of their own work which includes production images, prompt book texts and design sketches.

As an illustration of the kinds of materials that have been used by the students separate pages of information have been made available for the following productions from the Designing Shakespeare Archive:
