Completed Projects
Introduction
This section of the website is designed to house an ever increasing
pool of digital resources that can be used in Higher Education teaching.
The premise of this initiative is that the English Subject Centre Staff
will work collaboratively with individual members of the community to
created custom-made resources on the understanding that these resources
will be made available to the community as a whole through this website.
This approach we hope will give you, as colleagues in the discipline,
access to our skills and resources and give us, as the English Subject
Centre, an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the uses of
digital resources in specific environments.
The Projects
Images of Violence in Lear , Othello and Titus Andronicus
This
teaching package was developed in association with Dr. Ewan Fernie in
the Department of English at Royal Holloway University of London for
students on the Shakespeare MA programme. The aim of this resource has
been to put together a range of visual images with a series of questions
for the students to consider before coming to class. The media browser,
developed in Macromedia Flash, gives students the opportunity to select
their own collection of materials for discussion. This resource offers
an example of the ways digital resources can contribute to class discussion.
This example, or elements within it, could also act as a template for
using visual images in other areas. (Clicking on Images of Violence in
the left hand navigation bar will launch the resource in a separate Flash
window).
Performance approaches to King Lear
This
resource was developed by Dr. Christie Carson, Project Officer for C & IT,
in association with the Drama Department at Royal Holloway. The aim of
this resource has been to provide three different approaches to the play,
looking at directing, designing and acting. Images of performance are
combined with interviews with directors, designers and actors to provide
a range of responses to the play. The three sections can be viewed in
any order. The final section details the three approaches to one production.
Again the media browser gives access to all of the images which can be
rearranged in any order for use in lecturers, seminars or discussion,
either in class or online. The form can also be seen as a template for
work that incorporates images and sound. (Clicking on King Lear in
Performance in the left hand navigation bar will launch the resource
in a separate Flash window).
These resources are presented as examples rather than exemplars and are
designed to inspire a discussion amongst colleagues. If you would like
to contribute to our discussion board click on discussion under Support
Materials in the left hand navigation bar. If you who would like to work
with the English Subject Centre staff to develop your own resources in
this way please click on proposals to the left.
Key Skills with Chaucer
This
site was designed as a joint project by Dr Lesley Coote at the University
of Hull, and Mr Brett Lucas at the English Subject Centre under the auspices
of a grant provided by the Filter project. The
aim of the site is to provide an introduction to Geoffrey Chaucer and
the Canterbury Tales, to help introduce the subject to new students at
any level. It acknowledges that such students are often daunted by the
prospect of reading a medieval English text, expecting to find it dry
and irrelevant to their own life experiences. This site is designed to
be immediately accessible and attractive to students, whilst providing
basic information, and reference points to which they can return if they
wish. Of particular interest are the uses of visual imagery, multimedia
elements (including a multimedia player designed in Flash), discussion
points and a messageboard to encourage discussion.
