The English Subject Centre originated in 2000 as a joint venture of the Department of English at Royal Holloway, University of London, the Centre for Computing in the Humanities at King's College, University of London, and the Council for College and University English (CCUE). The English Subject Centre is now formally constituted as a service for HE English provided by Royal Holloway and funded by the Higher Education Academy, whilst retaining close relationships with King's College and CCUE.
The Centre is part of the Higher Education Academy, and is guided by an Advisory Board, whose membership comprises eminent academics broadly representative of the diversity of English and the institutions in which it is taught. Each year an independent external evaluator is appointed to report on the Subject Centre's work and inform its future policy and direction. Copies of Evaluation reports are available to read.
We work particularly closely on various projects and events with our cognate Subject Centres in the Higher Education Academy:

Structure
The English Subject Centre is one of twenty-four subject centres covering the main academic areas in UK Higher Education, which are part of the Higher Education Academy (formerly the Learning and Teaching Support Network - LTSN). The network is grounded in the recognition that the best way to enhance the status of teaching in Higher Education, and to advance its practice, is through the subject itself.
The Subject Centres are non-regulatory bodies, and their purpose is to provide a supportive network of communication and activities to aid the development of teaching and learning across the range of Higher Education awards. The Higher Education Academy (which is funded by the all the Higher Education Funding Councils of the UK - HEFCE, SHEFC, HEFCW, DENI) is owned by UUK and GuildHE.
