The English Subject Centre team - 2010

About us home page

Introduction from the Director, Prof. Ben Knights

Welcome to our website. Whether you are just 'dropping in', searching for something specific or a regular user I hope you have an interesting or rewarding visit.

The English Subject Centre is a small team based at Royal Holloway, University of London with a national role supporting those teaching English (as Literature, Language or Creative Writing) in higher education. We see ourselves as part of the English subject community with a brief to help its members to share ideas and good practice through events, networks and publications. We encourage you to make the most of us and our website.

The Higher Education Academy (which includes 24 Subject Centres which together form the Subject Network) is committed to enhancing the student learning experience of HE. This change of emphasis from 'learning and teaching' per se was heralded by the Cooke Report to which the Academy owes its existence.

Ten year anniversary
The Subject Centre is celebrating 10 years of supporting teaching and learning in English Literature, Language and Creative Writing. Read more about some of our achievements on a specially prepared page.

The English Subject Centre has the support of our Advisory Board in assuming that our role in this mission is best achieved by concentrating on the quality of learning and teaching.

We do not charge for most of our services and participation is voluntary. Our website reflects much but not all of what we do, so please contact us if you can't find what you are looking for, want to find out more, or simply share a problem, piece of news or information.

The following pages outline the philosophy and aims of the centre.
